The city of Vinnytsia and its territorial community have a glorious centuries-old history. Remains of ancient settlements testify that its territory has been inhabited since ancient times.

According to the established historiographical tradition, the date of the foundation of the city is considered to be 1363, when after the victory in the Battle of Blue Waters (1362), the great Lithuanian prince Olgerd, freeing Podillia from Golden Horde dependence, created the Principality of Podillia under the hands of the Koriatovych princes and ordered the strengthening of local settlements .

At the end of the 14th century, the separate Podilsk principality was liquidated and incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the first Vinnytsia starost was appointed in the city. At the same time, a bourgeois community was formed, the existence of which was legally recognized in the middle of the 15th century.

The residents of Vinnytsia had the right to own city land, trades and fairs, commercial and industrial establishments and other self-governing rights. From the beginning of the 16th century, the burghers regularly elected viyts to manage the city.
